Did you watch the biggest loser? I did not, I watched them do the triathlon and when I saw how slim she already was compared to the rest, strong, healthy – I literally said oh wow she has won already. Knowing that it wasn’t going to be too healthy for her to lose another 50 pounds for her 150 pound body at 5’4”, I started cheering for the other people who could do that and go on to win. She won a car, the triathlon, and she looked great. I never thought she would continue to lose big numbers. It did not even cross my MIND. I started to see social media going crazy last night about the finale, so I did some reading up today.
I hesitate to even talk about how unhealthy this all is. I love the biggest loser! I would totally hop on the show if I had some amazing story to give them, but frankly I am boring in my own mind and find all that loose skin from rapid weight loss scary. #truth I am going to talk about this, but only because I think Biggest Loser and NBC need to comment, and the more negative reactions out there- the more likely they will make a change. I hope Rachel does not get sucked into everyone bashing her, and just works with some after care of Doctors not paid by a show. If her primary care doctor says she is healthy, awesome. I just would hate for some teenage girl, woman, man, or anyone trying to lose weight to watch this and think that is what they need to do to be successful.
105 pounds. 60% loss? Rachel is beautiful, but @biggestlosernbc that is not healthy.
Looking at the numbers are scary, but then looking at her pictures makes me uneasy!
See. I have a HUGE problem she was in an Airy flowy dress, and photo shopped to be larger looking picture. One look at her weigh in photo, and I am ready to call Dr. Oz! He just had an anorexic woman on last week, and Rachel looks very similar to that poor woman. If I were to say photos of women do not inspire change or motivation to work on my own weight loss and health I would be lying. I have unhealthy eating habits, and a terrible relationship with food. Seeing her sets fire to so many different thoughts a novel would not be enough. In the end I am sad for her, and for anyone she inspires.
- Yes- She worked her butt off to become an athlete and she dominated Biggest Loser up and down and all over.
- Yes- She does look amazing in the sparkly dress- but if the camera adds 10lbs? ( Check out her Interview this morning on TV- It literally look like it hurt her to smile she was so thin)
- Yes- She did what the game wanted, and she won an incredible amount of money.
I just hope she gains a little weight and maintains it. Perhaps a therapist too, the twitterverse is going insane and I would hate for her to take any of it to heart. I do not think this is her fault, she wanted to win. She did. I just hope she doesn’t continue to lose any more weight.
I do not watch the show but my mom does. My mom had weight loss surgery ten years ago. My mom is now an unhealthy skeleton. I think she watched because she wishes she’d had done it the healthy natural way. I’ll definitely be asking her what she thinks about this season. I’m 5’3″ and I cannot imagine being 105 pounds! I’m currently around 170 pounds and my final goal weight is about 130 pounds but I’ve said all along I’ll stop losing and start maintaining when I feel comfortable. I still look large in pictures and I’m still considered an unhealthy weight by my doctors but I’m forty pounds lighter then when I started. If I had to I’d maintain here and be ok. I’m more interested in what her lean mass and body fat is now. A woman really shouldn’t be lower than 14% and she looks a lot lower than that.
I love that, and think you have a great point of view that most people don’t have. And congratulations on your weight loss!
I agree on her body fat I would like to know what doctor would approve of her stats…
Love this post !! ❤️
I haven’t watched it yet. (On the dvr) but I tend to agree, she looks almost malnourished. I think alot of these contestants try to lose but then after the finale they put on a little more to get back to a more maintanable (is that a word even?) weight. I hope that Rachel does the same.
Heck, all the swimmers I’ve seen have bulk especially in the shoulders/chest area. Maybe she will again once she gets back to competitive swimming.
Yeah, I hope she does too. I read so many horror stories about contestants starving themselves, not drinking water days before the weigh-in, I wish there was a show that talked about the therapy/more realistic journey to weight loss. I do not think losing 60% of your body weight is ever healthy. All I can think is poor organs…
Wow, that is crazy! I’ve never watched the biggest loser. I totally agree with the points you made. Great post!
Thanks!
Holy crap I just watched this and almost died! I just don’t think it sends a good message about what’s healthy. I think BL needs to follow some kind of height/weight chart and not allow contestants to win if they are under weight. Rachael is amazing but obviously under weight. I had to explain to my ten year old daughter that there such a thing as too thin.
That is a great idea! I am glad you could spin it and use a teachable moment. It’s sad that Rachel is being celebrated for such a damaging message.
I think she is too thin for her height, but I also think if you saw her on the street and didn’t know she was fat before, that you wouldn’t necessarily think she’s anorexic. She *DID* win a quarter of a million dollars and I think the real verdict is going to be from what she looks like 3 months from now!
I didn’t watch at all this season, but wow! I’m with Brandy on this one.
Visiting from SITS. Happy Monday!
I was in shock!! I hope she hasn’t done herself lasting damage trying to win that money! http://www.sweetanddownlow.com #SITSblogging
This made me super sad. I don’t know how she will feel about the media attention, the fact that she will feel pressure to remain this unhealthily skinny, and how her beauty is defined by her weight. I don’t want my daughter to feel that pressure!
I honestly have only seen parts of a few episodes of The Biggest Loser a few times here and there. I cannot imagine how incredibly hard this weight loss journey can be for most of them. But I did start hearing all the buzz about this season’s winner & of course, read a bit more into it. I guess I wish that they based who won on the overall health of the contestants rather than just how much weight they lost or how much of their total body percentage they lost. There is SO much more to being healthy than just being thin… or being a certain weight… or fitting into a particular dress size. I LOVE Jillian Michael’s workout videos on YouTube, but I read quite a few posts from TBL insiders and it sounds like she is scary to work with on the show. I can see that too- she can be harsh on her videos. I can only imagine what she might say or do when the cameras are turned off and no one is listening or watching. I mean, I will still do her workouts- I think they are fantastic for this time crunched mama. But I am glad she is not my actual personal trainer!
Like so many other things in life you need to find the balance. Maybe she was too heavy before, but you can’t let yourself go too far in the other direction either.
I did watch the season and I too was surprised at the finale when I saw Rachel. I think she is too thin however she’s only 5’4″ and she looks to be small boned. It looks as if she still works out a lot. Her legs are quite muscular. I also think she’ll gain to a healthy weight and maintain it.
Cathi
I’ve caught episodes here and there, but don’t really follow it. I did see my Facebook feed explode the night she won, and I kept meaning to check to see what all the fuss was about. I think you have some good advice for her on the therapist, and I certainly hope she maintains a healthy weight from now on. #SITSblogging
