I have good news, and I have not as good news.–Dreams of Disneyland #Tinkhalf

Which news first?

Yes, I am going to start with the negative. It really isn’t as bad when I get to the positive.

I am still having SUPER FREAKING BAD PLANTAR FACIITIS PAIN. I am SO UNDER PREPARED FOR TINKERBELL HALF MARATHON. Ok.. That was a frustration yell. I apologize. I have regained composure now. On to:

The good news.

  • I have started walking on a treadmill  at PT.
  • The most painful pain is only in my Right Plantar.
  • My ankle is out of the BRACE ( unless I am standing or walking for long periods of time. )
  • My Left plantar is doing pretty darn good most days with NO pain.
  • I am getting out of this –25 degree weather next week and going to California for the first time.
  • I am going to Disneyland for the first time ever!!
  • I have been re-learning portion control
  • I deep cleaned my house gypsy style
Tinkerbell Half Marathon

The brace 😉

Wait..a minute?

Yes. I ended with I cleaned my house Gypsy style. Have you ever watched that TLC show(s ) with American Gypsy’s? *crickets* Yeah. I watch a lot of mind rotting TV instead of being a good human sometimes.. a lot of times.. ANYWAYS these girls spend their entire life cleaning and serving their men. ( my words not theirs) BUT seriously they deep clean like I have never seen and their tricks with vinegar are incredible( which, they cannot pronounce. I am sorry. They struggle with the English language. )

Anywhoo,

I am currently icing the crap out of my heels( just to keep the left one happy) but I will say after almost 12 months of pain, having one doing well is a blessing. I am unsure why the other one isn’t progressing at all, but hey my plan for the race- KT tape. Compression socks. My inserts. and ice and drugs ibuprofen when I finish.

Am I worried I will not finish?

Yes. I wish I could say I had this great big acceptance that I have been injured for 5 months going on 2.5 months with zero activity besides the bike. I do wish I could say I was ready to accept (fully) that it would be ok to stop on the course.

I want to finish. I want to run. I would like to review how well I did at the 10k I used for my qualifying time.

Tinkerbell Half Marathon 2014

from rundisney.com

I finished about one hour and 7 minutes. runDisney used this time to calculate my half marathon time of a little over 2:30 finish for my 13.1. Great right? No. I feel incredibly stupid to be in corral B for tinkerbell. I will be walking in my stupid brace, while all the people dash off. I never want to be fast, a 10 minute mile is speedy enough to me and I am happy with that. I ran my last few runs before getting pulled from activity at 13:02 because I was in terrible pain. I am not wanting to be back at square one, or worse- but I ran that 10k so I could be in the same corral as my friend at Princess half marathon in February this year. Now I feel like I am so undeserving/ have no place to be a injured walker in the front of the corrals.

After a lot of thought.

I decided I will just plug my iPod in and take pictures and pretend to not notice everyone flying ( Haha get it Tinkerbell wings?) by me. I mean I did work so hard to get to this point, and I would like to think the bike kept my leg muscles from just deteriorating to nothing after all the work I put in them.  Thing is, I was never out of breath when I was running injured, I just was trying to run on a bunch of injuries. That came to bite me in the butt so badly.. ugh.

Anyways. I am hoping if any of you see my at Tinkerbell, you will not be mad ( I promise to STAY on the right) and just wave at this sad sad little walker who had dreams of flying through Disneyland.

The running will happen one day but for now I think you have the right attitude. Just go, enjoy your trip (Disneyland…squeeeeee!!!!), and enjoy your race and go at your own pace (heh a rhyme!). If the pain is too bad and you get swept, oh well!. This is a stepping stone to what you WILL accomplished when you are fully healed!
Sorry about the P.F. issues still. I’m still fighting with mine although they are getting much, much better.

You WILL finish this race. You WILL enjoy every minute of it. The best part about the Disney races is that it really isn’t about finishing fast or in your best time; it’s all about the costumes and taking pictures! Walk that baby and have a big smile on your face when you cross that finish line!

I feel you, Ashley! I dealt with horrible PT pain during the Wine and Dine half and no amount of icing, KT tape, or massage could make it feel better. I decided that I would just do the best that I could and finish with a smile on my face. I ran when I could, walked a lot and basically just enjoyed the experience. It wasn’t my best race but at the end, I crossed that finish line, grinning!

Enjoy Tink – it’s such a lovely course and a fun run! No one will be judging you for your speed, except maybe you! 😉 Have fun and enjoy Disneyland!

I second what Meridith said. We’ve all had a race like that. But guard your thoughts and your heart or the miles will drag on. Nobody is judging you, but your own mind/thoughts can make the miles drag on if you beat yourself up while you work towards the finish.. I made myself miserable during Princess and regret it…so chat up others near you, take pictures and use every aid station… you’ll have a blast!

I am so excited for you! I can tell you, from experience, my 2nd half (Princess Half Last year) a “sometimes” knee pain became a constant, excruciating knee pain during mile 3-13.1 during runDisney last year- but you’re in good company. Lots of people will be limping their way to the finish, life happens!

When the corral is launched, move to the sidelines (unless you move back a corral) so you don’t get potentially trampled with crazy runners in corral B.. I’ve seen people jogging or walking accidentally get bumped/run into during the excitement of the big race, so just be cautious so nobody jolts your leg and make it worse.

Like you said, tune out the people passing you. I know when the miles drag on and you’re not going as fast as you’d like it gets a bit overwhelming..you’ll be out of the park for miles like 8-13 and that’s when it gets mentally…tough… but crossing that finish line at YOUR time will be amazing.

When you’re in the parks, (YAY!!!!) take it EASY. I mean it…or bring lots of pain killers. I did Disney World for 3 days before the race, then the knee pain went off the scales before the race and during mile 3 I hit the pain wall… so just be cautious, put your feet up, bring pain meds and muscle rub or an ice pack for your room.

SO EXCITED FOR YOU!! I wish I could be there to cheer you on!!

Thank you Shannon! First. Good tips. I am only planning one full Day at Disney on Friday, and a half day or so Saturday, so I hopefully will not tired myself out.

Thank you so much for all the tips, I am going to try my best! Smile on my face!

Oh, and hide from all the runners stampeding. Noted.

First, American Gypsies is totally trash and I can’t believe you admit to watching that. AMERICAN GYPSY WEDDING, on the other hand, should be winning Emmy awards for every category. You’re going to love Disneyland, you’ll have a great time, and just keep moving forward. Oh, and a costume. You really need to wear a costume.

Yea.. It escalated from Gypsy Wedding to all the shows. Thanks TLC… ugh. haha.

Thank you! I am brainstorming a costume, but never being to the west coast besides Vegas, I really do not know what to wear/do !

I’m right there with you on the crappy TV! I instantly got your ‘gypsy style’ reference. LOL My friends and I actually have a weekly Book Club* where we watch reality TV shows and judge people. 🙂

I’m sorry you’re feeling less than worthy of your corral placement, but sh*t happens and everyone understands! You’re going to ROCK this half, no matter your time!!!

HAHA! I love that idea. I feel so alone here in my trash-tv loves. The slight chance I do get to talk to my dear husband I think he is like.. oh my gosh.. what is wrong with you. Secretly he would watch them WITH me 😉 Shh.

Thank you so much for your confidence boost. I kind of figured it was all in my head.

Two of my favorite quotes that keep me moving when I want to quit are these, I hope they help you too. You’ve GOT THIS!

“The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.” – John Bingham, No Need for Speed: A Beginner’s Guide to the Joy of Running

“It’s very hard in the beginning to understand that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants you to quit.” – George Sheehan
