So I had a deployment bucket list last year in my journal I did while he was gone. It went extremely well, the journaling really fizzled out there mid way through. It was really hard for me coping with last deployment, and balancing being positive when I talked to my husband. Keeping busy was extremely helpful once I reached out socially and made some friends and had weekly things to do. It sounds like all that should be easy to do, but trying to stay busy to keep my mind busy was hard. Kind of exhausting to be honest.
My best friend recommended I take the months of deployment last time to discover myself, take time for me. She grew up in the Air Force life, so she knew exactly what was going on. She made me feel like it was good to take time and have some personal growth, and see what I could accomplish before he came home. That it wasn’t SELFISH of me to do so.
It still felt selfish, and I struggled last time.
It took a lot for me to accept before he returns it is ok for me to have these “indulgences”. Who was I to try to be happy, and do all these self-serving goals while he is over there. Little did I know that activities, travel, fitness classes, skill building, social interaction (I had to force this and will be better this deployment!) is IMPORTANT. It isn’t an indulgence. It is taking care of myself so I can be a better supportive wife to my husband.
Have you seen those blogs with “30 by 30” or whatever number by whatever age? I didn’t know what they were, found them. Liked them! All those bloggers with pages with lofty goals listed out, and crossed out – I want to join in to better track my goals publicly too! It has already worked joining Facebook groups that resonate around fitness or health, twitter, it really does keep me from shoving my face full of cake – and hitting the pavement too.
